Charliewood 2016
CHARLIEWOOD
Barrett Barrera Projects presented CHARLIEWOOD, a multidisciplinary performance and installation by Paris-based artist Charlie le Mindu, in New York and Miami Beach. Presented at Cedar Lake in New York and later at the Faena Theater during Art Basel Miami Beach, the project marked the U.S. debut of le Mindu’s revue of fashion, performance, sculpture, dance, and video.
Originally produced for Palais de Tokyo in Paris, CHARLIEWOOD brought together le Mindu’s signature capillary sculptures, wigs, costumes, makeup, body paint, and surreal tableaux to create an immersive environment centered on transformation, spectacle, nightlife, and the possibilities of the human body. Hosted by Debbie Harry and Ladyfag, and the presentations included a special performances by CHRISTEENE.

Charlie le Mindu
Charlie le Mindu (b. 1987, Bergerac, France) is a Paris-based visual artist who pioneered the use of human hair, among other nontraditional materials, to bring together the worlds of fashion, performance art, and installation. Through his work in salons and underground performance spaces, le Mindu developed a singular approach to hair as sculpture, image, and performance. Defying categorization, he moves between hairstylist, milliner, couturier, sculptor, and performer, creating works that reimagine the body through hair, costume, performance, and constructed identity. His wearable works have been worn by performers including Lady Gaga, Peaches, Björk, and Doja Cat.
