CHRISTEENE, “NIGHT WINDOW”

In 2017, Barrett Barrera Projects launched an artist residency program and welcomed interdisciplinary artist Paul Soileau, better known as alter ego CHRISTEENE, and award-winning filmmaker PJ Raval as the inaugural artists-in-residence. While in residence, Soileau and Raval worked out of both the historic Lemp Brewery in the Cherokee Arts District and a former pharmaceutical warehouse in South City, St. Louis, collaborating extensively with local talent to produce a series of pop-up events around the city. This residency culminated in the creation of the music video “NIGHT WINDOW,“ which debuted worldwide Wednesday, October 14, 2020 following a ticketed full-length, live-streamed performance by CHRISTEENE.
Soileau and Raval are frequent collaborators working together under the name “Three Dollar Cinema” on CHRISTEENE’s graphic, charged music videos that are both permanently banned from YouTube and Facebook and have received critical acclaim. Spin magazine has called CHRISTEENE “a manic combination of Alice Cooper and Hedwig (of the Angry Inch)” and NOW Magazine compared her to “Beyonce on bath salts.” CHRISTEENE “injects both hip-hop and gay culture with a much needed dose of punk-rock humor and attitude,” said The New Yorker.
About Paul Soileau aka CHRISTEENE
Multidisciplinary artist Paul Soileau is the creator of punk alter ego CHRISTEENE. As CHRISTEENE, Soileau creates affecting, raw, and often not-safe-for-work music, visual art, video, and performances that have earned her the titles “drag terrorist” and “sexual liberator”. Within this transcendent, provocative identity, Soileau dons a dishevelled wig, smeared makeup, and barely there, ripped clothing playfully juxtaposing vulnerability and power while producing shrewd social and political commentary
About PJ Raval
PJ Raval discovered film and video after working with photography and media installation art early in his career. Credited with over seven short films, documentaries, and films Raval is an award-winning filmmaker examining gender, sexuality, identity, and the human condition. Raval is a 2015 Guggenheim Fellow, 2016 Firelight Media Fellow, named Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” and to Out Magazine’s “Out 100”, and a frequent award winner at international film festivals.
